Robotic painting ROI
Where savings come from, how transfer is measured and which assumptions must be explained before promising payback.
Painting payback is not calculated with a generic percentage. It depends on transfer, film thickness, rework, labor, energy and compliance. Before-and-after measurement is the only defensible basis.
Where savings come from
Paint, solvents, labor, rework, booth energy and compliance. Not all apply to every plant; measure which ones change.
| Criterion | How it is measured | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Transfer | Thickness, consumption and overspray. | Varies with part, gun and booth. |
| Rework | Rejected and repainted parts. | Requires quality records. |
| Energy | Booth and ventilation consumption. | Depends on schedule and climate. |
Paint transfer
Transfer is the share of paint that lands on the part. It improves with path, distance, gun and booth conditions, but is not promised without measuring thickness and consumption.
Thickness and overspray
Measuring thickness at defined points and tracking paint consumption allows before-and-after comparison. Overspray and cleaning are also cost.
Booth, ATEX and quality
Airflow, temperature, humidity, filtration and explosion protection affect the result. A painting cell is not assessed without the booth.
ROI model
Investment divided by annual savings, with explicit assumptions: output, thickness, consumption, labor, rework and energy. If data is missing, it is declared and tested.
When it is not worth it
Very small series, constant color changes, inadequate booth or missing data. In those cases, fix booth and process before investing.

Frequently asked questions
Where do savings come from?
Paint, solvents, labor, rework, energy and compliance. Not all apply to every plant; measure which ones change.
What is paint transfer?
The share of paint that lands on the part. It is measured with thickness, consumption and overspray, not a generic promise.
How is ROI measured?
Investment divided by annual savings, with assumptions on output, thickness, consumption, labor and rework. If data is missing, it is declared.
What about ATEX and the booth?
Airflow, temperature, humidity, filtration and explosion protection are reviewed. The booth conditions quality and safety.
When is it not worth it?
Very small series, constant color changes, inadequate booth or missing data. First fix the process.
Can it be tested before investing?
Yes. Testing with the real part and material validates thickness, finish, path and consumption.
